Power Outage and Food: Tips

Hi everyone.   As a NJ resident, I am all too well aware of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.  If you lost power, as I did and are unsure about what is safe/unsafe to eat follow these tips:

Many salty condiments like soy sauce, mustard, and ketchup will be ok for several days without power.  Also many sugary things like jelly will be ok.

Don't forget the rule"when in doubt, throw it out".  All meats, even those in the freezer should be tossed.  Even though things may still be partially frozen, you do not know for sure at what temperature they have been kept at.

In addition, wipe down all the shelves in your fridge with an antibacterial spray once you do get your power back.  The shelves are probably full of germs and bacteria since there may have been spills, and not kept under refrigeration.

If you don't already have one, it is worth purchasing a thermometer for your refrigerator and freezer so you can regularly check the temperature.

Here is a great reference website from the USDA about what to keep/what to toss:

Hope everyone is safe.
