What Can I Do To Ease Menopause Symptoms?

I frequently get asked for ways to help with menopause symptoms.  Here are a few things that may help:

1.  Eating a healthy balanced diet.  Make sure your meals include 3-4 oz. protein, whole grains, fruits and/or vegetables and some lowfat or nonfat dairy.  Eating more balanced meals may help keep mood swings under control since you are keeping your blood sugar more balanced.

2.  Drink lots of water.  Staying well hydrated throughout the day may ease some of your symptoms.

3.  Eat less processed foods, white flour and sugar.

4.  Drink less caffeine and alcohol.  Both can contribute to mood swings

5.  Add ground chia seed and ground flaxseed to your diet.  The high content of Omega 3's may help regulate moods  and hot flashes as well.  They may also cut down on any inflammation you may be experiencing in your body

6.  Eat fish at least two times per week.  Ditto on the Omega 3's listed above.

7.   Make sure you get enough calcium (1000-1200 mg.) and vitamin D (600-800 i.u.).  Vitamin D is a hormone now known to be important in so many processes in the body.

8.  Exercise!  The endorphins will help you feel better.  Do a combination of cardio and some muscle building.  The muscle building will help your joints.

Enjoy!

Hi- great question- it is best to get vitamins from eating a healthy balanced diet. You may want to check with your doctor to see if you are getting adequate vitamin D. If not, you might need a D supplement. In addition, if you are not getting enough calcium in your diet you may need a calcium supplement.

The effects of nutrients may only be discernible over an extended period, during which all food and waste must be analyzed. The number of variables involved in such experiments is high, making nutritional studies time-consuming and expensive, which explains why the science of human nutrition is still slowly evolving. Thanks.

Aileen Birkitt, RD on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 2:37 PM
Thanks for the comment! Yes, much is not known about how long nutrients effect the body. And I agree, much more research needs to be conducted. The best advice I can give is to try to get most nutrients from food, because we know that the body is more effective in most cases at processing nutrients from foods. Some vitamin supplements are debatable since we don't have all the research regarding the effectiveness of the supplements on a long term basis.

If you like to make your own jams and relishes or baked goods such as cookies and muffins, then you may wish to make your own nutritional labels to apply when you wrap up your food for gifts or for long-term storage. If you have a computer and Internet access, you can easily make your own nutritional labels. Thanks.

hanks for the tip- sounds really cool making your own labels! I would just recommend listing all ingredients and very carefully measuring all amounts so that you can have accurate labels.

The diet of an organism is what it eats, which is largely determined by the perceived palatability of foods. Dietitians are health professionals who specialize in human nutrition, meal planning, economics, and preparation. Thanks.
